Webinar: Accelerating adaptation through nature-based solutions at scale

Summary

This webinar addressed the need for greater effort to identify a pipeline of large-scale NbS projects that truly accelerate adaptation, and at the same time build the resilience of communities. This high-level session was moderated by Ede Jorge Ijjasz-Vasquez, Senior Advisor to the GCA, and Former Regional Director, Africa, Sustainable Development Practice Group, World Bank. The webinar explores cases from Africa (Dr. Bregje van Wesenbeeck, Deltares), Pakistan (Dr. Masood Arshad), and Mekong Delta (Henk Nieboer, Ecoshape), and how to finance these cases (Anirudh Rajashekar, Pegasys). The webinar also included a panel discussion with Vanessa Ushie, African Development Bank; Dada Bacudo, ASEAN Climate Resilience Network; and government representatives.

International Panel on Deltas and Coastal Areas

The IPDC launched at the UN 2023 Water Conference. The International Panel on Deltas and Coastal Areas (IPDC) an initiative of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, supported in its founding phase by Deltares and the Global Center on Adaptation, is a demand-driven and results-orientated coalition of the willing. Through evidence-based knowledge, the IPDC supports the development of national and regional adaptation strategies to mobilize finance for implementation. IPDC will bring water to the heart of sustainable development and climate action. Driven by dedicated leadership, knowledge partners and international coalitions, the IPDC aims to be an effective international platform to foster partnerships and act on improving lives, livelihoods and ecosystems in the deltas, coastal areas and islands by supporting the implementation of climate adaptation strategies and accelerating climate actions.

The Geography of Future Water Challenges - Bending the Trend

"Since the publication of The Geography of Future Water Challenges in 2018, events of extreme flooding, drought, wildfires and tropical storms have increasingly disrupted societies and ecosystems around the world. Without the urgently needed, collective and effective responses, water- and climate-related disasters are projected to get worse. This follow-up study, requested by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, shows that we can bend the trend of increasing water- and climate-related stresses, as presented in the 2018 report."

ADAPTATION AT THE UN-WATER CONFERENCE

The purpose of the webinar was to create space for experts and implementing champions to share tactics for adaptive leadership, coalition building & coordination, change management, and human resource capacity for their peers and for bottom-up international water policy messaging supported by pathways to action.
