Mitigation: Tunisia has committed to reducing its carbon intensity (the relationship between total amount of greenhouse gas emissions and GDP) by 41% by 2030, when compared to 2010. Within the energy sector specifically, Tunisia aims to decrease its carbon intensity by 46%. 13% of Tunisia's overall proposed reduction is unconditional, while the remaining 28% is dependent on external financial and technical support. Tunisia intends to achieve these goals by increasing energy efficiency, increasing the renewable production of electricity, implementing mitigation efforts in the cement industry, increasing reforestation, encouraging climate smart agriculture, and facilitating waste-based energy and energy smart water treatment. Adaptation: Given Tunisia's vulnerability to climate change adaptation is an important priority, and Tunisia is adapting to climate change within the contexts of water resources, coastline, agriculture, ecosystems, tourism, and health. Water resource adaptation focuses on the effective reuse of water and supplying water to urban centers. Erosion prevention, coastline rehabilitation, and preventive infrastructure are important coastline adaptation efforts. Agriculture adaptation includes improvements in irrigation, mixed farming-livestock production, monitoring and early warning systems, and arable crop systems. Ecosystem adaptation can take the form of rehabilitation of ecological systems across Tunisia's diverse regions and climatic zones. Tourism adaptation involves encouraging eco-tourism, coastal adaptation and alternatives to coastal tourisms, improved water management within the tourism industry (including renewably powered seawater desalination). Finally health adaptation includes furthers study, improved monitoring of epidemics and vector-borne disease, and changes to the health system. International Climate and Environmental Commitments: The Paris Agreement (Party), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (Party), Convention on Biological Diversity (Party), Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (Party), Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Party)

Summary

Tunisia's NDC-SDG Connections

Within the Mediterranean, Tunisia is considered one of the countries most exposed to climate change. Tunisia has a variable climate, the country includes coastline, substantial agricultural land, and desert. Within Tunisia, Climate change is likely to lead to increased temperatures, reduced precipitation, sea level rise, and more floods and droughts. This poses serious economic and social costs to agriculture, health, and water supply, among others. Tunisia's has been working to address climate change, and is particularly focused on the security of energy supply and stability in energy prices, given energy sector’s critical socio-economic role.
