Casablanca's 360 urban farming project
Urban farming in Casablance, Morocco, has encompassed several issues such as land, water availability, market linkages and empowerment of women, in addition to providing nutrition to practicing families.
Mitigation: By 2030, Morocco has committed to an unconditional 17% reduction in greenhouse gas emission, from a business as usual scenario, and pledged a 42% reduction should it receive substantial support from the international community. These reductions will be achieved by working across all sectors, with a particular focus on the energy sector. Mitigation efforts in the energy sector focus on greater energy production from renewable sources, reduction in energy consumption by buildings, sustainable transport, and industrial energy use. Other strategies include formalizing, improving, and expanding waste and wastewater management, growing sustainable agriculture and forestry, and improving urban public transport. Adaptation: Morocco identifies seven vulnerable sectors to climate change (water, agriculture, fisheries, coastline, forestry, health, and tourism), and focuses its adaptation efforts on four sectors: agriculture, water, forests, and fisheries and aquaculture. Within agriculture, adaptation objectives include improvements in irrigation, building hydro-agricultural infrastructure, and providing risk insurance against the impacts of climate variation on certain crops. Water adaptation focuses on replenishing groundwater tables, improving water treatment, desalination, and constructing dams. Forest adaptation incudes replenishing forests, afforestation, and preventing erosion. Finally, for fisheries and aquaculture, adaptation objectives focus on further study of coastal systems, the creation of marine protected areas, and managing the quality and quantity of products taken from the sea. International Climate and Environmental Commitments: The Paris Agreement (Party), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (Party), Convention on Biological Diversity (Party), Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (Party), Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Party)
Summary
Morocco is a Northern African country along the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Morocco is currently experiencing population growth, industrial expansion, and agricultural expansion. Its national socio-economic development is increasingly putting pressure on natural resources, from Morocco's coastline to its water resources. This pressure is greatly exacerbated by climate change, resulting in water scarcity, coastal erosion, flooding, and desertification, making mitigating and adapting to climate change a national priority. Morocco is often recognized for making a significant contribution towards global mitigation.
