In March 2023, the International Panel on Deltas and Coastal Areas (IPDC) officially launched at the UN Water Conference in New York. This article summarizes the champion's statements at the high-level launch event.

"Since the publication of The Geography of Future Water Challenges in 2018, events of extreme flooding, drought, wildfires and tropical storms have increasingly disrupted societies and ecosystems around the world. Without the urgently needed, collective and effective responses, water- and climate-related disasters are projected to get worse. This follow-up study, requested by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, shows that we can bend the trend of increasing water- and climate-related stresses, as presented in the 2018 report."

Delta Marine Consultants developed concrete X-shaped blocs providing proven protection against waves and currents. DMC offers solutions for numerous challenges relating to water. Examples include stormwater drainage systems in urban areas, methods to control river runoff, flood and wave protection systems for both in marine and river environments.  

Mainstreaming of water adaptation is necessary to accelerate a system-wide coherence on water across multiple agendas. These three videos are a call to action to mainstream water climate adaptation - targeting policy processes at international events such COP27, the UN 2023 Water Conference and COP28. 

In this webinar, on the 23rd of June, speakers presented coastal adaptation strategies where Nature based Solutions have been used. They explored the challenges and opportunities for upscaling these solutions and discussed the policy framework and financial support to upscale NbS.

Floods can be mitigated by building simple dams from local material to avoid destruction of crops downstream. These and other measures were discussed at an exchange in April 2022 between the Horn of Africa Regional Environmental Network and Slovak experts.

Interventions on nature-based solutions need to be systemic. Here we explore the system of mangroves-seagrass - coral reef, and the importance of addressing this as a system. The success of one ecosystem is linked to that of the others, and each performs different functions.

This webinar addressed the need for greater effort to identify a pipeline of large-scale NbS projects that  accelerate adaptation, and at the same time build the resilience of communities. Speakers presented cases  followed by a panel discussion.
